This is characterised by the gradual deterioration of cartilage which cushions the ends of the bones and allows free and easy movement. As the cartilage gently erodes the joints can become stiff and painful. There are two types of OA, primary and secondary. Primary OA is generally associated with wear and tear of life and the of developing this increases as you get older. The secondary type can develop much younger and typically 10 or more years after a specific injury or obesity.
How can Physiotherapy help you?
Initially you will be designated a physiotherapist from one of our experienced team who will assess your problem and address any particular concerns or worries that you may have with your condition. Our physiotherapists are trained to be able to help devise a specific exercise programme for you to do at home, on a regular basis, to prevent the joints stiffening any further. The exercises may also help reduce your present symptoms. You will be given a written list of exercises with clear diagrams to help you remember what to do!
If you are suffering from a lot of pain there are many types of treatment which can be used to help reduce your symptoms as described above.
