The term arthritis encompasses more than 100 diseases and conditions that affect joints, the surrounding tissue and connective tissue. Arthritis can cause mild to severe pain in the joints and also tenderness and swelling. The two most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. There are around 10 million people with arthritis in the UK who have learnt to take control of their symptoms and improve the quality of their life. Arthritis is not just for older people but all ages including children.
There is a lot that physiotherapy can do to help alleviate the pain and symptoms by showing you how to maximise the quality of your life by giving you strategies and exercises to do both at home and in our Clinics.
Physiotherapists can use a number of techniques to reduce the pain of arthritis and this may include gentle joint mobilisations, electrotherapy (using various machines such as ultrasound), acupuncture and exercise therapy and advice. We can also show you how to improve your walking by assessing your gait pattern.
